Why do I keep both Windows and Ubuntu.
I bought a new desktop in May 2020 and installed two operating systems on it - Windows 10, and Ubuntu 19.04 LTS. The thought of keeping two OS instead of just one was well rooted in my mind since my college years, and from my experience, I knew that just one won't be able to fulfil my expectations always.
There have been times in the past, especially during the period of Windows upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10, when I had experienced annoyance with windows. With my slow internet connection, coupled with repeated uncontrollable update downloads in the background, with frequent bugs, I had enough to be fed up with windows. Ubuntu came to me as a simpler alternative, with no worries of background consumption of data - as 3G data used to be expensive in those days.
I need the functionalities of Windows, which ubuntu is devoid of due to the smaller base of available software, but I also love the simplicity of ubuntu. When I feel overwhelmed by windows, I find respite in Ubuntu, yet I am required to return to Windows when the rest period is over and when I need to get back to work with my new refound focus.
I see the arrangement analogous to a polyamorous triad arrangement, wherein Windows would correspond to my primary partner - the one I am committed to for life and with whom I share my life, property, finances, children, and Ubuntu corresponds to my secondary partner - as irreplaceable as the primary and no less in importance, yet offers the required soothing and clutter-free environment to rest, recuperate, and enjoy life. My secondary partner could have some other primary partner, and the relationship with me could be somewhat limited to fulfil emotional needs only, while economic and sustenance needs are taken care of with her primary partner.
