On Surpankha

Often misportrayed as a character filled with lust and ravage, Surpankha was a playful, outspoken, boisterous woman. She chased what she wanted and expressed her desires openly. Upon encountering two city boys, she was charmed by them, and spoke out her mind. But, her words outraged the modesty of these noblemen, for whom the moral standards of womanhood were completely antithetical to what Surpankha exhibited. They misunderstood her and punished her unjustly. Surpankha wasn't devil. She was just a tribal girl who was 'too much to handle' for these innocent, inexperienced boys from the town.
